Though enamelling and other decorative craftsmanship techniques associated with it were traditionally a key pillar of Swiss watchmaking, today only a few brands keep these prestigious art forms alive. To uphold these fine crafts on the brink of extinction, Patek Philippe launched its Rare Handcrafts series, with enamelling techniques as focal point of the collection. The present dial mainly features the cloisonné enamel technique, which requires a high-level of craftsmanship and artisanship. Very thin gold wires are used to form the outlines of the motif, separating the different enamel colours from each other. The dial is then fired up around nine times in a kiln to set the enamel paste. This painstaking process leads to the beautiful present dial, that depicts three Iris flowers in vibrant colours and fireflies in the night-sky background.

While the enamel decoration takes up most of the spotlight, the Calatrava heritage of the present watch should not be forgotten. Since 1932, the Calatrava line has been the benchmark for men’s dress watches in Patek Philippe’s arsenal. Its Bauhaus-inspired design has become an icon, prioritizing minimalism and subtle elegance above all else. Crafted out of platinum, the present case further features the typical crystal that is wedged between the lugs at the 6 o’clock position. The intricately crafted dial perfectly contrasts the unobtrusive design of the watch, combining the traditional Calatrava identity with Patek Philippe’s exceptional artisanship. Highly sought-after, this reference truly is a work of art made for the wrist.
