A further development on from the original 3-hand Explorer, Rolex envisioned a watch targeted at spelunkers and cave divers, who would spend hours or even days underground. Without any natural indication to tell whether it was day or night, these adventurers would need a watch that had built in 24 hour time, and this was precisely the watch that Rolex built for them with the reference 1655.
The first Explorer II utilised a bold design that was also reflective of the 1970s, with an engraved metal bezel and oversized 24 hour hand in bright orange, making the exact time absolutely unambiguous. Though initially unpopular due to the niche application and eccentric design, these elements have today made the 1655 a cult-favourite among astute collectors who appreciate the highly distinct aesthetic.
