A tonneau-shaped, quartz-powered watch does not sound like F.P. Journe at all. However, the Swiss watchmaker has produced an exceptionally remarkable and innovative piece, one that even traditional watch purists would appreciate. The Élégante was initially intended as a sporty women’s watch, when it was introduced in 2014, but gained so much popularity that the brand released a bigger men’s version shortly after. When dealing with the watch, its allure quickly becomes recognizable: This might be one of the most wearable, functional and sporty watches Francois-Paul Journe has ever created.

While quartz movements usually lack the artisanal aspect of mechanical watches, this calibre 1210 might just be the best feature on this watch. As one of the most complex and intricate quartz movements ever created, this masterpiece took 8 years to develop and is equipped with a mechanical motion detector that is visible at the 4 o’clock position. When left in a resting position for more than 30 minutes, the watch will switch into standby mode, meaning that the hands stop turning. In the background, the microprocessor will still continue to track time, so that the hands can automatically set themselves to the current time once the watch is picked up again.
