The Rolex Daytona is arguably one of the most universally adored wristwatch model designs in history, with its wide variety of references and variations drawing in enthusiasts and increasing its collectibility. Though with a few exceptions, manually wound Daytonas are generally the most coveted, being the earliest and perhaps purest expression of the entire line. Within these four-digit references, the earlier 6239 through 6264 featured non-Oyster cases, which were slightly slimmer and were fitted with pump pushers. The later references 6263 and 6265 were the first Oyster Daytonas, and due to the thicker waterproof cases and screw-down pushers, wear larger and are often favoured by collectors.
The present reference 6263 is further fitted with the coveted “Big Red” dial, with the “Daytona” nomenclature above the 6 o’clock sub-dial printed larger than is found in other references, and in bright red. Earlier 6263 examples were entirely devoid of the “Daytona” text, and later service dials featured the “Little Red” dial with considerably smaller print. The recognisability and striking nature of “Big Red” dials have made them a favourite amongst collectors.
