The reference 6239 occupies a seminal position in the history of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. Introduced in 1963, it was the first model to feature the engraved tachymeter bezel and the “Cosmograph” designation on the dial — design traits that would define the series for decades to follow.

The present example, dating to approximately 1966, represents one of the early configurations distinguished by the discreet “Daytona” signature below Rolex and Cosmograph, known among collectors as the “small Daytona.” The model was initially launched as the 'Le Mans' after the French 24hr rave but Rolex changed the name to Daytona to appeal to the thriving American market more familiar with the Rolex sponsored Daytona 24hr race in Florida. The dial’s harmonious contrast between its silver sunburst dial plate and black subsidiary registers offers excellent legibility, while the engraved steel bezel reinforces the model’s instrument-like functionality.

The stainless steel case, measures 37 mm and retains the classic pump pushers of early manual-wind Daytona models, prior to the introduction of screw-down 'Oyster' versions later in the decade. Inside ticks the hand-wound calibre 722, based on the proven Valjoux 72 architecture, adjusted by Rolex to its chronometer standards of the period.

As the earliest reference of the Daytona family, the 6239 represents the genesis of an icon. Its combination of restrained proportions, historically significant dial layout, and early “small Daytona” designation has made it one of the more collectible variants within the pre-Oyster non-Paul Newman era. The present watch offers discerning collectors an opportunity to acquire a fine and honest example of this important and foundational Rolex chronograph.
