A. Lange & Söhne made headlines in 2019 with the debut of their first-ever sports watch, the Odysseus. This groundbreaking model marked a bold departure for the Saxon manufacture, introducing stainless steel and an integrated bracelet—choices that surprised both longtime collectors and industry observers. With its signature outsized day and date display, the Odysseus featured an entirely new case design that distinguished it from the established genre of luxury sports watches. Unlike the stainless steel, water-resistant icons born of Gérald Genta’s design language, the Odysseus offered a distinctly Lange interpretation—one that initially divided opinions but swiftly secured its place as a modern classic.

This example is among the earliest Odysseus watches produced and is distinguished by its removable bracelet, a feature found only on the very first pieces to leave the manufacture. Current-production Odysseus models are fitted with an integrated bracelet that cannot be detached from the case, making these first-generation examples subtly but notably different from those offered today.

Powering the Odysseus is the caliber L155.1 Datomatic, ticking at 4 hertz, with a platinum-rimmed rotor. It is water-resistant to 30 meters, and the bracelet was engineered for both comfort and effortless adjustment on the wrist. The dial showcases two distinct finishes: a circular guilloché pattern on the outer ring and a hammered texture on the inner ring, echoed on the subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock. Its deep blue hue shifts between vivid cerulean and rich navy tones depending on the light, while each white gold hand and hour marker is filled with luminous material to ensure legibility in the dark.

The present example, Reference 363.179, remains in unworn condition with full factory stickers and is accompanied by its original guarantee and presentation box.
