An important reference in the lineage of Rolex Submariners, the reference 1680 was introduced in 1969 and produced until 1979 as the very first Submariner with a date function. Waterproof up to 200 meters, the 1680 can be split into two main categories, cosmetically differentiated by a single line of text on their dial. Examples produced between 1967 and roughly 1976 feature the ever-desirable red “Submariner” text, while later examples bear white text throughout the dial.

The present watch is highly collectible and considered to be iconic by many vintage Rolex lovers because it features that red “submariner” text. Collectors have classified the “Red Sub” in seven dial variants, based on slight printing variations. The first three marks are easily identified by a “meters first” depth rating. The present watch, a “feet first” example, features a “Mark IV” dial, matching the 2.9m case number, which is characterized by “open 6s” in the depth rating and a subtle white shadow on the red “submariner” text.

Offered alongside a Rolex presentation box with outer packaging, booklets, hangtags, and its punched papers, this particular Submariner is a collector-grade example of an iconic reference.
