Chronographs have been an integral part of Breguet’s now 250-year history since its inception in 1775, first in the form of pocket watches and later moving to wristwatches. Collectors may be more aware of the iconic Type XX military chronograph, launched in the 1950s to the specifications of the French military, but Breguet’s earliest chronograph wristwatches date back to the early 1930s and lean more towards everyday civilian use rather than pure utility.

The present watch dates to the same period of production as the early Type XX, featuring the same Valjoux cal. 222 movement with flyback functionality, and is preserved in absolutely incredible condition. The French assay mark on the caseback is crisp and full, as is the personal engraving, a monogram reading “J.M.B.” The lugs are full, showing crisp edges. Squared pushers and a very well-preserved silvered dial with applied indices and a script Breguet signature complete the look.

Large for the period at 36.5 mm in diameter, this is a classically elegant example of Breguet’s true vintage wristwatch era. Chronographs from the great Parisian brand of this vintage are quite rare to begin with, but even more so when equipped with a flyback caliber – collectors of Breguet should understand the importance of a “retour en vol” chronograph.
