Description

Housed in one case are two fully independent movements, each with its own mainspring, gear train, escapement and balance. Movement 1 in addition to the time also includes the minute repeating work, movement 2 is for time, the only connection each movement shares is the winding pinion which connects the crown wheel of movement 1 to the crown wheel of movement 2 

 

Winding

Both movements are tandem wound by turning the crown clockwise

 

Hand-Setting

Movement 1 - blued steel hands, hours and minutes are set by pulling the crown and turning to the desired time.

Movement 2 - gold hands, hours and minutes are set by pushing the pin at 1’clock and turning the crown to the desired time


Movement 1

The 17”’ movement is visible when the case back and cuvette are in the open position revealing the backplate with damascened decoration, lever escapement, bi-metallic compensation balance, index regulation, further off-set index wheel for regulation of Movement 2 marked slow/fast, two polished steel hammers repeating on two coiled gongs, the bridge work engraved 48 jewels, 8 adjustments and signed and numbered Patek, Philippe & Co., No. 197589, Geneva Switzerland, bottom plate with perlage decoration, the motion, repeating and keyless work largely visible

 

Movement 2

The full movement is positioned between the dial and the bottom plate of movement 1, as a result the movement is hidden and only accessible by disassembling the entire watch, back plate with decorative perlage, damascened bridges including asymmetrical barrel bridge, lever escapement, bi-metallic compensation balance, slide for regulation connected to regulating wheel on Movement 1, bottom plate with damascened decoration, the motion and keyless work largely visible

 

Dial: gold matte, Roman numerals, two pairs of hour and minute hands, one pair blued steel and the other pair in gold, two subsidiary dials for constant seconds, one with a blued steel hand and the other with a gold hand, outer minute ring, signed Patek, Philippe & Co., Geneva, Switzerland

 

Case: 18k yellow gold ultra-slim bassine case with hidden hinges, repeating slide to band, gold cuvette engraved No. 197589 made for John Motley Morehead 1921 by Patek, Philippe & Co, Geneva, Switzerland the case fitted with an olivette at 1 o’clock that controls time-setting for both pairs of hands, bow stamped PPC, case stamped with Calatrava Cross, Swiss Helvetia head assay, 18k and PP.Co, numbered 407854

Accompanied by leather Patek Philippe & Co., Genève box and Extract from the Archives confirming the year of manufacture in 1920 and date of sale on 20 May 1922, and a copy of the invoice from E. Greenberg, dated May 18th, 1965, listing the sale of “three open faced gold Pocket watch by Patek Philippe for $11,000, to Mr. Robert M. Olmsted, May 18,1965”
