A hoshi-bachi [helmet with standing rivets]

Signed Munetomo

The helmet bowl Edo period, 18th – 19th century 

 

the fourteen plate russet iron bowl with widely spaced rivets and raised ridges, terminating in a five-stage copper tehen kanamono of stylised floret form, stencilled Dutch leather peak, copper fukurin, red lacquered leather underside, the large turnbacks with Kashiwa mon [oak leaf crests] on stencilled leather, the two tiered black lacquer solid plate neck guard in kiritsuke-kozane [false lamellae], with close spaced lacing in dark blue braid, gilt metal maedate in the form of a crescent moon, gilt metal kuwagata surmounted on an copper maedate-dai chased and engraved foliate scrolls
