Thence by descent to the present owner

Influenced by Giuseppe Castiglione (1688–1766), known in China as Lang Shining (郎世寧), this painting reflects the fusion of Chinese artistic tradition with Western realism. Castiglione, trained in European techniques, introduced the careful study of anatomy, the application of light and shadow to model form, and fine brushwork to depict textures such as fur and feathers. His celebrated series, "Ten Fine Hounds" (十駿犬圖), portrays Emperor Qianlong’s favorite dogs, each identified by name and rendered with exceptional precision and sensitivity, embodying both lifelike detail and individual character.
