Due to an early twentieth century label on the back of this painting the sitter was identified as Dorcas (Dorcus) Merrill Gage (1780-1865). The inscription states that it is the great grandmother of S.G. Dole (Susan Gage Dole).

While Dorcas Gage was Susan Dole's great-grandmother, given the age of the sitter and the working dates of Samuel Addison Shute and Ruth Whittier Shute, it is very likely the portrayal of Phebe Pearl (1741-abt. 1828) who lived in Orford, New Hampshire. She is Mrs. Dole's great-great-grandmother.
