The London-born businessman and philanthropist Sir Arthur Gilbert (1913-2001) spent most of his career in Los Angeles, where together with his wife Rosalinde he formed a significant collection of gold and silver objects and Italian micromosaic works, which he donated the British nation in 1996. Exhibited at Somerset House in the Strand, London from 2001-2008, it now forms part of the Victoria & Albert Museum collections.
