This Autumn-Winter 1993 Christian Dior coat is a quintessential expression of Gianfranco Ferré’s aesthetic during his tenure at the house. Ferré’s Dior was defined by architectural volume, commanding silhouettes, and opulent materials, all of which are clearly present here. The dramatic red brocade—rich, heavy, and visually imposing—reflects his preference for grand, historically rooted textiles, while the oversized golden-brown fur shawl collar demonstrates his instinct for framing the body in bold, sculptural forms. The elaborate passementerie along the edges and cuffs speaks to the ornate, highly worked detailing that became one of his signatures.
Equally important is the coat’s origin within Dior’s Haute Fourrure atelier, the house’s highest level of fur craftsmanship. Haute Fourrure pieces were produced alongside haute couture and adhered to the same standards: entirely hand-built, technically complex, and created in extremely limited quantities. Under Ferré’s direction, Dior’s fur atelier embraced fur as both structure and ornament, treating it with the same creative seriousness as eveningwear. This coat exemplifies that approach, using fur not as mere trim but as a major visual and architectural element. Grand, and meticulously crafted, this piece is a textbook representation of Ferré’s impact on Dior and a rare surviving example of the maison’s elite Haute Fourrure work.
