Joseph Losey was an influential American film director, screenwriter, and producer whose career was shaped by political conviction, artistic ambition, and exile.

Born in Wisconsin, into a wealthy and conservative family, Losey initially studied medicine but soon turned to theater. Deeply influenced by Marxist ideas, he traveled to Moscow in 1931 and later studied under Bertolt Brecht in Germany, developing a taste for socially engaged and visually expressive art.

In the 1940s, he began directing films in Hollywood, but his career was disrupted in the 1950s when he was blacklisted during the McCarthy era for his leftist political ties. He chose self-exile and moved to the United Kingdom, where he rebuilt his career.

In Britain, Losey collaborated frequently with playwright Harold Pinter, creating acclaimed films such as The Servant (1963), Accident (1967), and The Go-Between (1971) which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. His later films include Mr. Klein (1976) with Alain Delon and Don Giovanni (1979), based on Mozart’s opera. Over his career, he worked with major actors including Dirk Bogarde, Elizabeth Taylor, and Jane Fonda. He was known for his psychologically complex characters, social critique, and elegant visual style.

Joseph Losey died in London in 1984, leaving behind a work marked by political depth and cinematic innovation.
