First introduced in the late 1980s, the Rolex Daytona Reference 16518 marked a significant evolution in the lineage of the iconic chronograph. Cased in 18k yellow gold and fitted with a leather strap, the 16518 was powered by the caliber 4030, based on the famed Zenith El Primero movement—making it one of the celebrated "Zenith Daytonas" produced between 1988 and 2000. These watches were the first self-winding Daytonas and ushered in a new era of modernity for Rolex’s flagship chronograph.

What sets this particular example apart is the ‘Inverted 6’ configuration on the white dial, where the 6 in the hour totalizer at 6 o'clock appears upside down—an early and collectible dial variant that was later corrected in subsequent production. Coupled with applied Arabic numerals and contrasting chronograph chapter registers, the dial exudes a rare and sporty elegance.

The yellow gold 40mm case retains the strong proportions and screw-down pushers that define the Daytona, offering water resistance and durability alongside luxury. Combined with the leather strap and yellow gold deployant clasp, the reference 16518 bridges the worlds of refined dress watch and robust sports chronograph.

Increasingly sought after for its transitional nature, connection to Zenith’s storied movement, and early dial quirks like the Inverted 6, the present example is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a collector-grade Daytona from a pivotal era in the model’s history.
