Prior to the early 1950s, the concept of a civilian tool watch was virtually unheard of. While watchmakers produced specialized timepieces for military use in the early 20th century, most watches available to the public were designed primarily for fashion. The 1950s and 1960s saw a surge in demand for functional, purpose-driven watches, driven by the rise of SCUBA diving and growing interest in aviation. Breitling was among the pioneers to embrace this trend with the introduction of the Navitimer in 1954.
The Navitimer’s hallmark feature is its iconic slide rule bezel, a mechanical calculator enabling pilots to perform essential flight calculations such as airspeed, ascent and descent rates, flight time, distance traveled, fuel consumption, and even unit conversions. It remains one of the most visually striking and practical mechanical instruments ever created.
This particular edition pays tribute to the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School, universally known as TOPGUN. Established in 1969 to enhance aerial combat tactics following significant losses during the Vietnam War, TOPGUN provides elite, graduate-level training to the Navy’s top aviators and flight officers at the Naval Air Station. The Navitimer 92 Top Gun proudly bears the school’s insignia on its dial.
Offered in very good condition, this is a great opportunity for collectors to acquire a piece of horological history that celebrates a storied and patriotic institution.
