Released in 1958 alongside the ref. 5510, the Rolex Submariner reference 5508 emerged during a period when the manufacture was rapidly iterating in pursuit of the ideal dive watch. The 5508 offered a more wearable profile than its sibling, featuring a slimmer case and smaller crown, though with a corresponding depth rating of 100 meters. Notably, it was the first Submariner to house a calibre from the 1500 series and represents the final generation of the model produced without crown guards. Together, these traits place the 5508 among the most distinctive early references in the Submariner’s evolution.
