The origin story of the Pasha de Cartier is often traced back to 1931 or 1932, when Thami El Glaoui, the Pasha of Marrakesh, is said to have commissioned a bespoke timepiece from Louis Cartier, a robust gold watch, capable of withstanding an active lifestyle and offering a level of water resistance that was uncommon at the time. The proposed solution featured a large case diameter, a protective crown cover, and a metal grid shielding the dial. However, while captivating, there is no definitive evidence that such a piece was ever delivered to the Pasha himself.
What is well-documented, however, is that the modern interpretation of the Pasha was created by legendary designer Gérald Genta, under the leadership of Alain-Dominique Perrin, Cartier’s CEO from 1975 to 1998.
Launched in 1985, the Pasha collection has since evolved significantly. In the early 2000s, Cartier sought to reinterpret its more masculine designs, and the sporty, utilitarian nature of the Pasha made it an ideal candidate for innovation. This effort culminated in the release of the Pasha Seatimer in 2006, a bold reinterpretation that incorporated diving-inspired elements such as a rotating bezel and a water-resistant crown cap. Most notably, it introduced a rubber coated stainless steel bracelet, blending durability with a contemporary aesthetic.
The present example is offered in beautiful condition, representing an excellent opportunity to acquire a piece that seamlessly combines sporty functionality with Cartier’s unmistakable elegance.
