Originally conceived in 1954, the Rolex GMT Master was designed for pilots and global travelers. Initially commissioned by Pan American Airlines, the watch was an instant commercial success. The legibility of the dial paired with the 24-hour bi-rotating bezel made this watch a must have for Rolex’s clientele. The original ref.6542 was replaced by the updated ref.1675 in 1959. All of the newer models featured a metal bezel rather than the easily cracked Bakelite. The 1675 remained in production until 1980.
This example features a dial where the lume has faded to a light pumpkin color. This effect on the dials has become a particularly appealing part of the aging process on this model for collectors.
