Rolex, ever the masters of marketing, ensured that Sir Edmund Hillary wore a watch of theirs on the first ascent to the peak of Mount Everest with Tenzing Norgay. This journey inspired the creation of the first Explorer, a 36mm watch that captured the spirit of the hike.
With its distinct 3, 6, 9 dial that has now become integral to the line, the Explorer is a discrete icon in the Rolex lineup. The ref. 14270 a distinctly modernized version of the original watch was first seen at the Basel Fair in 1989 and cemented Rolexes place at the cross of sports and luxury.
The current example comes with its presentation box, dated guaranty paper, and booklets. The watch is in nearly unworn condition.
