The GMT-Master’s origins trace back to the early 1950s, when Pan American World Airways commissioned Rolex to create a watch tailored for their pilots, who required simultaneous access to multiple time zones. Drawing design cues from the Submariner, another model Rolex was developing at the time, the GMT-Master introduced a distinctive fourth hand displaying 24-hour time, paired with a bi-colored bezel insert to indicate AM and PM hours. The iconic red and blue bezel, famously known as the “Pepsi” colorway, paid homage to Pan Am’s branding, culminating in the release of the reference 6542 GMT-Master in 1953.
This groundbreaking model was succeeded by the reference 1675, which evolved through numerous subtle updates during its 21-year production run. In the 2000s, the introduction of the six-digit references offered significant technical and design enhancements in the collection’s history.
The present example is a collectors dream. It retains its factory stickers and comes with all the desirable accessories.
