The Rolex Daytona reference 116520 is widely regarded as one of the most iconic watches in the world and has become virtually synonymous with the Rolex brand itself. For much of its history, the Daytona chronograph did not feature an in-house movement, until the introduction of the reference 116520 changed that.

Originally launched in 1963, the Daytona was inspired by the world of automotive racing and quickly established itself as Rolex’s premier chronograph model. While not Rolex’s first chronograph wristwatch, the Daytona was the first to feature its tachymeter scale engraved on the bezel rather than printed on the dial’s periphery, a hallmark design element that remains today.

Although automatic chronograph movements debuted in 1969, it was not until 1988 that Rolex introduced a self-winding movement to the Daytona line. This initial automatic Daytona was powered by a heavily modified Zenith El Primero caliber. It wasn’t until the year 2000 that Rolex finally equipped the Daytona with its own in-house movement, making the 116520 the first Daytona to be fully developed by Rolex and marking the end of reliance on off-the-shelf calibers.

Produced from 2000 to 2016, the reference 116520 retains the classic Daytona aesthetic but incorporates numerous technical and aesthetic improvements, anchored by its robust in-house movement. The present example is offered in never-worn condition with full set, representing a rare opportunity to acquire a pristine example of this legendary chronograph.
