Coco Chanel entered the world of jewellery in the 1930s, a time when fine jewellery was defined by opulence and excess. Chanel introduced a new vision of luxury, mirroring the blend of refinement and freedom that runs so strongly through her fashion design. She famously paired precious gems with costume materials, to create pieces that were bold yet wearable, and expressive of modern femininity - a heritage which Chanel has continued to champion, well demonstrated in this piece.

Matelassé comes the French verb matelasser, meaning to quilt, a design which was first introduced in the iconic 2.55 Chanel handbag in 1955. Very successfully emulated here in diamonds and pearls, the high lustre of the pearls contrasts wonderfully with the interwoven diamonds.
