Schlumberger (1907 – 1987) was born in 1907 in Mulhouse, a city in eastern France which was then part of Germany. Schlumberger was sent initially by his parents to Berlin to pursue a career in banking, which he rebuked by moving to Paris to follow his passion for the arts, opening an atelier on Rue de la Boetie, having had no formal training. In 1937 Elsa Schiaparelli who appointed him to her button collections and costume jewellery after seeing his flower brooches made from Meissen porcelain. He amassed a strong following of clients, including the Duchess of Windsor, Greta Garbo, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn. The gold and enamel bracelets first appeared in 1962, and were popularised by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis who received her first bracelet, a white and gold enamel bracelet as a gift from her close friend Rachel "Bunny" Mellon.
