Caricature of John Singer Sargent


Watercolor and ink (to sight: 350 x 285 mm), matted, glazed, and framed (622 x 521 mm), signed at upper right (“Edmund Dulac”); mat with light darkening at lower edge, not examined out of frame.


Edmund Dulac produced this caricature of John Singer Sargent for Martin Birnbaum, the dealer and critic who championed both artists in the United States. Birnbaum reproduced the drawing in his study The Last Romantic: The Story of More Than a Half-Century in the World of Art (1960).
