The first official mention of a boîte-à-deux tabacs, used to keep two different kinds of snuff separated within one tight-fitting container, is a gold-mounted lacquer box by the marchand-mercier Lazare Duvaux (1703-1758). Duvaux was active as a merchant by 1743, his main customers were the king and Madame de Pompadour who received from him in 1753 'une tabatiere de lacq a deux tabacs, en or émaille' (Clare LeCorbeiller, European and American Snuff Boxes 1730-1830, London, 1966, p. 21).
