MORE ABOUT THIS LOT:
Exclusive experience with the Alpha Estate in Northwestern Macedonia
Enjoy a magical escape for four to six people to Alpha Estate in Northwestern Macedonia with a private tour and vertical tasting of Xinomavro from centenary vines at Alpha Estate with winemaker Angelos C. Iatridis, accompanied by festive dinner composed of the finest local ingredients prepared by a local chef and one night at the exclusive Lynx Hotel, designated as a National Geographic Traveller UK Selection—Lakes & Mountains Collection.
Yiannis Karakasis MW explains, "One of Greece’s most profound single-vineyard expressions, Barba Yannis comes from ungrafted, 105-year-old Xinomavro vines in Amyndeon, Macedonia. This lot offers a rare vertical of five vintages, showing the evolution of Greece’s most noble red variety in a continental, high-altitude terroir.
Alpha Estate Wines — Winemaker’s Technical Notes:
2013 – Cool-year classicism: taut red-cherry and sun-dried tomato, graphite-fine tannins and bright acidity; fully ripe phenolics keep it authoritative rather than austere.
2015 – Benchmark poise: generous, saturated fruit with rose and black-tea hints; depth, equilibrium, and the kind of balance that promises a long, graceful evolution.
2017 – Solar yet precise: a powerful core of ripe cherry and warm spice, tobacco undertones and an architectural frame—one of the decade’s standouts.
2019 – Finesse first: early-picked purity, silken tannins and aromatic precision (red fruit, dried herbs, tomato leaf); elegant, finely etched, terrior-true.
2021 – Vibrant and youthful: pristine fruit, lively acidity and mineral drive; currently coiled, with outstanding underlying extract and potential.
With this lot, indulge in a vertical tasting of Single Block “Barba Yannis”, a 3.71-hectare vineyard planted in 1919. These are traditional, goblet-trained vines, 100% ungrafted and dry farmed. The vineyard rests on sandy clay loam soils over limestone conglomerates, offering excellent natural drainage. Yields are strictly limited to 25 hl/ha following its natural and meticulous selection. No herbicides are used, and the vineyard is currently in its third year of conversion to organic cultivation.
