MORE ABOUT THIS LOT:
8 rare Rieslings from various FAIR'N GREEN wineries in Germany
Schloss Johannisberg, Riesling Rosalack Spätlese, Rheingau 1964 Schloss Johannisberg Riesling Spätlese Rosalack 1964 is a unique wine made from the best grapes of the Schloss Johannisberg winery in Rheingau, Germany. Today, it is a fully rounded 50-hectare single vineyard, which surrounds the mighty castle in a semicircle and descends in terraces towards the south to the Rhine. The wines often delight connoisseurs even after many decades. In the underground treasure chamber of Schloss Johannisberg, the ‘bibliotheca subterranea’, one can trace the development of
Schloss Johannisberg's own quality criteria back to 1748. Around 12,000 bottles from all the great vintages since 1748 currently rest in this 900-year-old vaulted cellar.
The 1964 vintage was a leap year. It was one of the best vintages of the 1960s, producing very fine wines. Harvest of 440 half-barrels – 264,000 litres! Largest harvest to date. New barrels had to be purchased during the harvest.
The bouquet is intense with aromas of apricot jam, mirabelle plum compote, mandarin compote, orange fillets and chamomile blossoms.
Analysis: The average must weight of the 1964 vintage was 78.6 ° Oechsle and 8.3 g/l acidity.
Clemens Busch, Marienburg Raffes VDP. Grosse Lage, Moselle 2016
The ‘Raffes’ plot is a special selection within the historic Falkenlay vineyard. Protected from cold east winds and grown on deep grey slate, the grapes always reach exceptional ripeness. This ‘prime cut’ of Marienburg produces concentrated, healthy grapes that are both fruity and delicately mineral. The 2016 Pündericher Marienburg Riesling "Raffes" has a deep, fresh and spicy-mineral bouquet with olive leaf and crushed mocha bean aromas. Full-bodied, round and super concentrated, this is a massive yet still elegant Riesling. The 2016 Riesling Marienburg Große Lage "Raffes" presents itself with opulence of sweet peach, blossom honey, quince, candied lemon and salted caramel. Radiant and intense golden yellow.
Georg Breuer, Berg Schlossberg, Rüdesheim Riesling, Rheingau 2009
The Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg is a Rheingau legend and one of the prime locations in Germany. Here immense power and finesse come together. Salty and juicy at the same time. A lot of mineral spiciness. Delicate scent of stone fruits and orange skin. A Riesling with elegant style and fine tannins. Very long lasting and with a monumental depth. made from the Estate’s finest casks from this vineyard. It offers a stunningly floral nose made of pear, white peach, pina colada, almond, spices, and aniseed herbs. The wine is superbly playful and filigreed on the palate, and leaves an intense and persistent feel of fruits and herbs in the long and multilayered finish. This offers impressive power but without any undue weight.
Dönnhoff, Oberhäuser Brücke Monopol Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Nahe, 2018
The Oberhäuser Brücke is a renowned monopole vineyard owned exclusively by the Dönnhoff family. This wind-protected valley location owes its name to the historic Luitpold Bridge, which stands directly opposite the small 1.1-hectare plot. Thanks to its close proximity to the temperature-regulating river, the Oberhäuser Brücke is blessed with a special microclimate that allows for early flowering with a long growing season and late harvesting. In good years, exceptionally rich Riesling grapes with an incomparable mineral structure ripen here. The special soil formation with primary rock in the subsoil – grey slate overlaid with a top layer of loess loam – not only gives this exceptional GG its crystalline elegance, but also ensures sufficient water supply to the vines, especially in dry vintages.
This is a very contrastive sweet wine with sliced melon, white peaches and honey. Dried fruit. Full-bodied yet compact and tight, giving it an agile tension. Fresh and energetic acidity. Salted caramel aftertaste.
Heymann-Löwenstein, Uhlen Laubach Trockenbeerenauslese, Moselle 2019
Deep and very concentrated, dried plant to herbal, also slightly yellow-spicy aroma of preserved, candied and dried stone fruit with mineral and floral notes. Highly concentrated, creamy, sweet, absolutely pure fruit, very fine acidity, dried plant to herbal and also floral nuances, distinct minerality, dense, deep and persistent on the palate, complex and beguiling, a hint of dark berries in the background, very long, dense, again creamy and juicy finish. Magnificent.
Dr. H. Thanisch, Erben Müller-Burggraef, Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Spätlese, Moselle 2016
The legendary Berncasteler Doctor vineyard is located behind the village of Bernkastel and is one of the most famous vineyards in Germany. This 100% steep site with a South-South West orientation consists of medium deep, stony loamy weathered argillaceous schist. Planted with up to 100-year-old vines, full-bodied, spicy wines are grown here. The South-South-West orientation of the vineyard guarantees optimal sunshine throughout most of the day.
The grapes have been handpicked and carefully selected in the various areas of the vineyard. They were only slightly squeezed and then left for 14 hours to macerate before being gently pressed. The wine has been fermented without any addition of cultured yeast or enzymes for a period of four till five months. After the fermentation was completed, it was left to mature for several more months on the lees in order to gain more stability and complexity.
Wine Description
Still quite closed, this wine already shows today its complexity. Aromas of Kumquat, elderberries, blood orange and stone fruit, brioche and truffles as well a delicate herbal note. Slightly smoky with the for the Doctor typical, very expressive minerality.
Food Affinities
Fabulous with fish and seafood. Great with poultry and any
kind of spicy dishes.
Nik Weis - St. Urbans-Hof, Riesling Bockstein Z GG, Moselle 2018
The strictly limited 2018 Grand Cru ‘Bockstein Z’ comes from the Zickelgarten, arguably the best parcel in the Ockfener Bockstein vineyard. Nik Weis succeeds in bringing the character of the vineyard and the unique terroir into the few bottles of Bockstein Z with particular intensity through parcel-specific vinification.
The Rieslings from the Bockstein Grand Cru are characterised by their fine spice and smoky, mineral character and are perhaps the most polished and distinctive of the Nik Weis winery.
The Bockstein Z GG already shows power and wonderfully exotic aromas on the nose, accompanied by smoky, floral notes. On the palate, pure exoticism, juicy lime and pineapple are accompanied by elderberry and apple aromas.
Wonderfully piquant acidity with multifaceted minerality and delicate herbal aromas.
A Riesling monument with seemingly endless ageing potential.
Hans Wirsching, Riesling Sister Act, Franconia 2018
Ripe aromas of peach, melon and brioche on the nose, complemented by a hint of clove. On the palate, further aromas of lemon and vineyard peach, balanced by lively acidity in a medium body. Long, intense finish.
