The Statue Bay, Empire

Archival Pigment Print on Paper

Executed in 2025, this work is number 2 from an edition of 5.

The Statue Bay is part of Empire, a body of work by British-Korean artist Sheldrick that explores how photographs preserve and reshape our view of the past by transforming over 35,000 color film slides from 1940 to 1990 into layered compositions through restoration and AI. These slides, capturing personal milestones and historic moments, are reimagined to connect the past with the present, inviting reflection on how images shape our collective memory and link us to history.

Empire by Sheldrick is more than an art project; it's a profound meditation on the nature of history, memory, and the tools we use to understand our world. By harnessing the capabilities of artificial intelligence, the project bridges the gap between traditional photography and contemporary technology, offering fresh perspectives on familiar narratives.

In an age where images are ubiquitous, and technology can reinterpret our collective memories, Empire serves as a poignant reminder of the power of images and the importance of critically examining the narratives they construct. It challenges us to reconsider how history is written and who gets to tell the stories that define our identities.

As viewers engage with the AI-generated compositions, they are invited to question their own perceptions and assumptions. The project encourages a dialogue—not just between the past and the present but also among individuals and cultures. It's an invitation to explore the complexities of our shared histories and to envision new possibilities for understanding and connection.
