Madeleine Castaing was a decorator, antique dealer and patron of the arts, whose flamboyant, poetic style - combining audacity, culture and stagecraft - revolutionised French interior design and left a lasting imprint on the international design scene. A former silent film actress nicknamed the ‘French Mary Pickford’, she soon gave up acting to devote herself to interior design.

Her Paris boutique on rue Jacob/Rue Bonaparte became a landmark of the post-war decorating scene. Approached by the likes of Jean Cocteau, Marc Chagall, Picasso and Erik Satie, she influenced their work and decor, particularly Cocteau's home in Milly-la-Forêt.
