Description
with an openwork decoration of large flowers and scrolling foliage, centered with a cardinal coat-of-arms, marked: city, maker's mark and striche
Length. 19.1/4 in (49 cm)
Weight. 1120 gr (32.79 oz)
The coat-of-arms are those of the Rospigliosi family, probably to Giulio Rospigliosi (1600–1669), apostolic nuncio and future Pope Clement IX (1667–1669). He began his ecclesiastical career teaching theology in Padua. He worked closely with Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644) and became a diplomat, notably in Spain. He was also vicar of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. He was appointed cardinal in 1657 and secretary of state to Pope Alexander VII, then was unanimously elected pope in 1667. He embellished the city of Rome, notably commissioning Bernini to create the angels of the Ponte Sant'Angelo and the Colonnade of St. Peter's Basilica.
