The plaque with a night scene is based on the circa 1715-17 painting by Jean-Antoine Watteau, titled The Italian comedy. It owes its title to the 1734 reproduction engraving by Charles-Nicolas Cochin the Elder. Frederick the Great purchased the painting, together with a counterpart, The French Comedy, for his gallery in Sanssouci before 1769. They were later transferred to the new Gemäldegalerie in Berlin in 1829, where they remain today, Ident. No . 470. The other plaque is based on the circa 1725-28 painting by Nicolas Lancret, titled The actors of the Comédie-Italienne, which was bequeathed to the Louvre, Paris, in 1869, inv. no. MI 1073.
