As the present panel was reduced from its original size, it is difficult to state with certainty what scene is unfolding here. However, the courtly figures, shown in the midst of revelry and wearing crowns of grapevines, suggest that they are participating in a triumph or celebration of Bacchus. The central figure, depicted lunging forward, while two serpents are writhing to the right, provides further indication of a Bacchic scene, as serpents were often associated with the Roman god.
