An inscribed marble stele of Avalokiteshvara, Eastern Wei dynasty, dated to the second year of the Wuding period (in accordance with 544) | 東魏武定二年（544年） 大理石雕刻銘觀世音菩薩立像

Acquired from Lai Chi Man, Taipei, 20th February 1998.

Compare three similar large examples from the Eastern Wei dynasty (534-550), the first a marble figure of Avalokitehvara, dated to the fourth year of the Xinghe period (542), also inscribed on three sides, now in the Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo, no. TC-724; the second a yellow marble figure of Avalokiteshvara, dated to the third year of the Wuding period (545), formerly from the collection of Sakamoto Gorō and sold in these rooms, 1st April 2018, lot 3014; and the last a white marble figure of Avalokiteshvara, dated to the first year of the Wuding period (543), from the collections of Wang Xuzu, Yao Guifang, and Sakamoto Gorō, sold in these rooms, 8th October 2013, lot 130, and again at Christie’s Hong Kong, 30th November 2020, lot 3007.

此尊菩薩於蓮台上跣足而立，右手上舉持蓮蕾，左手下垂提香囊，頭戴寶冠，身佩瓔珞，可知此菩薩為觀世音。中分髮髻下見方圓面相，笑容慈愍，褒衣博帶中顯秀骨清姿，儀態莊嚴。通身罩舟形背光，置於長方基座上，基座側、背三面刻銘，共三十三字，記供養人似典為親眷發願。

考銘文可知，此像造於東魏武定二年（544年）。東魏（534-550年）由北魏（386-534年）分裂而來，造像風格亦有延續。北魏政權由鮮卑拓跋氏創立，初期受西域影響，造像衣紋細密寫實，入主中原後，形象塑造向中原靠攏；隨孝文帝（471-499年在位）494年遷都洛陽，胡風漢化進一步昭顯，造像氣質由雄偉豪放轉向秀麗窈窕，見李玉珉，〈北魏的造像〉，《故宮文物月刊》第二卷第十期，1984年，頁100-106。此尊菩薩衣紋層疊，長襬拖至蓮台側下，褶邊呈鋸齒狀，由北魏之厚重垂墜過渡為輕薄貼體，尤顯觀世音飄逸自在。

可比三例，與此尊佈局一致，形神兼似，一者，大理石雕觀世音菩薩立像，東魏興和四年（542年）造，同為三面刻銘，藏東京國立博物館，藏品編號TC-724；二者，黃理石雕觀世音菩薩立像，東魏武定三年（545年）造，坂本五郎舊藏，售於香港蘇富比2018年4月1日，拍品編號3014；三者，白石觀世音菩薩立像，東魏武定元年（543年）造，基座亦刻銘，由王緒祖、姚貴昉及坂本五郎遞藏，後兩度易手，分別售於香港蘇富比2013年10月8日，編號130，及香港佳士得2020年11月30日，編號3007。
