Galerie Myrna Myers, Paris, November 1996.
Collection of the Tsui Museum of Art, Hong Kong, no. MMM040.
The present vase belongs to an important group of documentary celadon-glazed wares from the Longquan kilns, many of which were commissioned for Buddhist and ancestral temples across Ming China. Compare another closely related vase of this type but with a less dramatically flattered and foot, dated by inscription to the dingmao year (corresponding to 1327), from the Percival David Collection at the British Museum, London, in the Illustrated Catalogue of Celadon Wares in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, Section 7, London, 1997, pl. 237; and an uninscribed Yuan dynasty form from the Qing Court Collection in The Complete Collection of the Treasures of the Palace Museum: Monochrome Porcelain, Hong Kong, 1999, pl. 167.
Aside from its rare inscription, the present vase is also particularly remarkable for its fluid, naturalistic carved design which seems to float below the piece’s luscious watery glaze. Compare a related vase, of a different bottle-like form, with a similar style of incised peonies in Zhu Boqian, ed., Longquan yao qingci / Celadons from Longquan Kilns, Taipei, 1998, pl. 244.
