It is extremely rare to find an example of this type, bearing a Yongzheng mark. From its playful landscape design, rendered in a rich underglaze-blue palette, to its curvaceous bell-shape, the present cup is notably rooted in the artistic tradition of the Kangxi period (1662-1722) and can therefore be reliably dated to the very earliest years of the Yongzheng reign, before the formulation of the more typical ‘Yongzheng taste.’
To date, no other Yongzheng beakers of this type appear to have come to market. Compare a number of closely related Kangxi examples including one preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, illustrated in Rose Kerr, Chinese Ceramics. Porcelain of the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911, London, 1986, pl. 41; and a pair from the Highfield Jones Collection, sold in our London rooms, 8th July 1975, lot 171 and again in these rooms 29th November 1977, lot 215.
