Yamanaka & Co., London.

Bluett & Sons Ltd., London.

Rose Kerr, The Glowing Pearl of the Southern Song Treasure — Longquan Ware, Hong Kong, 2022, pl. 35.

The present jar, crisply decorated with biscuit applied dragon motifs, belongs to a renowned type of Longquan celadon wares. In its bold relief decoration, the present jar embodies the spirit of innovation that characterised the late-phase Longquan kilns. In contrast to earlier Longquan ware which favoured restraint and clarity of form, these appliqué-decorated jars embrace a more expressive aesthetic, marrying the luminous bluish glaze with sculptural dragon motifs that undulate across the body.

Jar forms applied with sprig-moulded dragons are exceedingly rare in the Longquan repertoire. Compare a related Longquan celadon handled jar with dragon appliqué decoration, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 29th April 2019, lot 386.
