Compare a similar dish of this size, from the Hans Popper Collection, exhibited twice in The Hans Popper Collection of Oriental Art, Center of Asian Art and Culture, San Francisco, 1973, cat. no. 95, and in Song Ceramics from the Hans Popper Collection, Eskenazi, London, 2005, cat. no. 16; another example, with traces of a gilt inscription, illustrated in Junkichi Mayuyama, Mayuyama, Seventy Years, vol. I, Tokyo, 1976, cat. no. 361. A further similar dish, formerly with J. J. Lally & Co., New York, is published in Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. 3, pt. II, London, 2006, cat. no. 1425, where the author notes the rarity of undecorated Ding wares and suggests that this example may originally have been enhanced with gilding.
