Description

Height 4 in., 10 cm

Li Yin Oriental Art, Taipei, 1994.

The iconography of this exquisite marble weight is clearly Buddhist, with the lion depicted crouching above crisply carved lotus petals. A smaller Tang marble scroll weight in the form of a rabbit was sold in our London rooms, 12th December 1989, lot 30, from the collection of the British Rail Pension Fund, and again in our Hong Kong rooms, 8th April 2011, lot 3250. Compare also a small white marble carving of a rabbit from this period similarly carved in crouching poses, but on a rectangular base, from the Richard C. Bull Collection, sold in these rooms, 6th December 1983, lot 252.
