Description

A hardstone-inlaid gilt-bronze incised 'animals' chariot canopy

Western Han dynasty

overall l. 41.7 cm

The present chariot canopy is divided into four pictorial planes, each decorated individually with scenes of animals. Compare a similarly decorated chariot canopy excavated from the Han-dynasty tomb in Sanpanshan, Dingzhou, Hebei province, now in Hebei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, illustrated in Zhongguo wenwu jinghua daquan qingtongjuan [Compendium of Chinese art. Bronzes], Taipei, 1993, pl. 1188.
