Description

SCRIPTORES REI RUSTICAE. Libri De re rustica, M. Catonis Marci Terentii Varronis, L. Junii Moderati Columellae, Palladii Rutilii, quorum summam pagina sequenti reperies. Paris: Antoine Augereau for Jean Petit, February 1533 (=1534 n.s.) 


A rare Parisian edition of the writings of the Latin agronomists known as the Scriptores rei rusticae: Cato, Columella, Palladius, and Varro.


Folio (332 x 216 mm). Roman and occasional Greek type, 45 lines plus headline. Collation: A6 B-C8 a6 [2]a-z8 A-G8 H10: 277 of 278 leaves (lacking final blank). Woodcut printer's device on title-page, woodcut diagrams, initial spaces. (Marginal dampstaining, small ink stains to [2]a3, i3, m4, t8v, A6r, E3r and E5, marginal worming to [2]a2-b3, 1mm hole to foot of H1, worming to G4-endpaper slightly affecting text.)


Binding: Contemporary vellum (334 x 233 mm) with fore-edge flaps, flat spine with traces of manuscript title, 7 cords piercing spine, plain edges. (Binding damaged and heavily restored.)


Provenance: Unidentified Jesuit College, possibly Passau, inked-over ownership inscription to title-page "Collegii Patav.(?) Soc: Jesu". Acquisition: Purchased in 2018 from Librairie Paul Jammes, Paris. References: USTC 187048
