Toledano & Chan b/2 – The Diamond Distorter
The powers of the universe act in suspicious and fortuitous ways, so much so that an all-new Toledano & Chan emerged from the ether, crafted especially for the AREA_51 auction. A distortion of timekeeping as we know it, this asymmetrical device defies convention through its shape.
The piece was inspired by the retired Lockheed Martin F-117 Stealth Fighter. Based on equations predicting how a shape scatters or reflects electromagnetic radiation, these models, known as the ‘hopeless diamond,’ evolved into the angular panels that defined the iconic jet.
Inspired by the prismatic F-117, the b/2 challenges the human desire for order, embracing the boundless expanse of space with a case shape that avoids right angles. Its asymmetrical crystal scatters and reflects light beyond the ozone layer, while the sandblasted matte grey steel recalls the Stealth Fighter’s surfaces. A 24k gold dial nods to the F-117’s use of gold for thermal shielding.
