Mike Gabriel directed and storyboarded the 2004 short film, Lorenzo. The concept for the short was originated by Disney legend Joe Grant in the 1940s. When he came back to work at Disney in the 1990s, Grant re-ignited Lorenzo as an idea for a short around the time Don Hahn put a new Fantasia into development.
Lorenzo was nominated for an Oscar in 2005. Lorenzo won the "Best Short "Annie award in 2005 and also holds the distinction of being the first Disney film to win the European award Le Grand Crystal that same year.
