The most famous effigy of Charles V (1500–1558), Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, is the one created by the Italian sculptor and medallist Leone Leoni (1509–1590), shown in profile on medals or as a half-length bronze statue (now in the Prado Museum). The small bronze bust presented here stands out for the refinement of its chasing and its gilding. As Cyril Humphris has suggested, the inscription CARL V could point to an Austrian origin, most likely a sculptor such as Balthasar Ferdinand Moll (1717–1785), a pupil of the renowned Georg Raphael Donner, who worked at the Habsburg court in Vienna.
