The print source derives from the illustration in Chapter XIII, depicting the stories of King David, in Les Figures de la Bible, illustrated by Pierre Vase and published in Lyon in 1564, only five years prior to the execution of this dish.

Mastro Domenico introduced several variations to the print model in order to achieve a harmonious balance between the painted scene and the circular form of the plate. The central scene with Susanna at the fountain has been repositioned to the center, while one of the elders is shown hiding to the right. The church with bell tower and garden, visible on the left of the print, has been omitted from the composition on the dish.
