This scagliola tabletop shares several features with works by Giovanni Massa (Carpi, 1660–1741), published by Graziano Manni ( 1997, figs. 188–224; pp. 176-199).

In particular, it closely resembles Massa’s perspectival squared floors with columns set on pedestals, executed with a virtuoso imitation of veined marbles.

Massa’s earliest documented works date to 1689, while his most important paliotti in scagliola are in the Duomo of Carpi and in the churches of Modena, Guastalla, and Novellara. He is also recorded as having produced table tops, signed and dated, though these have since been lost.
