Lovina was born on May 21, 1781 to parents Moses Hawks and Rhoda Childs. Her father Moses grew up in Deerfield, before Shelburne was incorporated in 1768, and served in the French and Indian Wars, under his father Major John Hawks and also in the Revolution where he was an ensign. Moses and Rhoda had ten children and Lovina was the 7th child. She died unmarried on February 24, 1828; her tombstone in the Shelburne Cemetery states, "Miss Lovina Hawks". Her brother, Abner, and sister also had their portraits taken by the same hand. There are two pairs of portraits in Shelburne Museum and one in Memorial Hall, Deerfield. Two portraits were in the Stewart Gregory Collection, and another two are in private collections.
