Mae C. Plante (Ravensky); ex-collection of Gloria Vanderbilt

The MCP monogram is for Mae Cadwell Plant (1881-1956). The daughter of Senator Martin Cadwell, her first husband was Selden M. Mainwarming, who she divorced in 1914. She next married financier Morton F. Plant, and it was their townhouse at Fifth Avenue and 52nd Street which was exchanged in 1916 with Cartier for a two-strand pearl necklace; it remains the Cartier headquarters to this day. He died in 1918, and she next married Col. William Hayward, and after his death in 1944 industrialist John E. Rovensky. Her house in Newport was Clarendon Court, and Rovensky Park across the street was donated by her widower in Mae's memory. In 1957, after her death, Parke-Bernet held a series of auctions of her collections, totaling over $2.3 million.
