Of Shruder, Arthur Grimwade writes "the character of his work, at its best, some of the finest rococo pieces, suggests a German origin and training to match his name (London Goldsmiths 1697-1837, p. 658). Christopher Hartop commented on his close connection with the "Lamerie group" of rococo silversmiths in London (Huguenot Legacy, p. 52) and he was a favorite of the Hartmans, who had three lots by him in their first collection, including a set of caddies, a pair of candelabra, and a snuffers and tray for the Earl of Warrington (ibid., nos. 80, 102, and 104).
